For my service learning assignment I knitted a scarf. I found it rather frustrating and yet still fun. I prefer to crèche, it is faster and less needles. I had quite a difficulty getting the hang of working with the needles, but once I found out the best way to hold them and the right tension of the yarn it went a lot faster. After a time I was able to watch television and knit at the same time. It was defiantly a learning experience. The first day Mrs. Krom thought us how to knit was quite interesting. Many of the students were having a hard time with it, including me. I was able to get the basics after trying and failing multiple times. I was one of those students. I had to ask the teacher for help and my fellow students. As the scarf came to look like an actual scarf it became very satisfying. At the point where the stitch changed I had to go back to a fellow student for help. It took her a couple of times to get me to do the stitch properly. This was a fun experience that I am hopefully going to continue with. I will not be making anything as complicated as a shirt but I will continue with perfecting the scarf making. Though this experience was difficult at first, it was rewarding in the end.
Though I did the knitting for my service learning, I had planned on working at the Mother House on campus. I was going to work with the elderly nuns and I would have been reading them books, having conversations and basically keeping them company. I was really looking forward to working wit I was suppose to come in contact with, unfortunately had to go to the hospital for surgery. So do to this unfortunate event I had to choose another form of community service.
I had difficulties picking a new service learning project. I had many things to pick from but they all had to do with children. I do not particularly like children. Many of my roommates chose to work with the children and they enjoyed it very much. I have worked before with children, in my home town I worked at the local boys and girls club. I volunteered there for 4 months and then started working there as an employee. I did enjoy the fact that I was helping the children become better people and work well within the community. The presses of getting the children to pay attention and listen was quiet difficult and not as rewarding as I thought it would have been. This is why I had such a hard time finding a service learning project. I did not want to work with children again, so I waited until my teacher had an alternative project.
The service learning project was very interesting. I found that doing only ten hours of community service really does not let you really understand how much your help is really needed in your community. I like the fact that we had to do the service learning but I think it should have been more hours. I feel that many of the students could have appreciated the experience more.
